I fond the other group presentation a good introduction to the other materials; Plastic and metal. i was surprised at how much i had actually remembered from school, although I learnt about them in science and not DT. Ive found it quite surprising just how much science and maths are actually apart of DT and what we are learning when i never heard any of this mentioned in my DT lessons at school.
Initially I was a little confused as to why i am need to know the structure of materials? and what it look like under a microscope!? ......However I then realised that knowing the structure and classifications of materials would help me with choosing appropriate materials for a project. Knowing the make up of materials and their working properties which due to their structure. Not all woods, metals and plastics behave in the same way so knowing the different types of materials will help me to make better choices.
And understanding of the structure of materials can also be used to improve materials working properties by mixing different types together to make a new material such as with Alloy metals.
I think I need to look further into plastic and metal as i am still not as clear on them as i am with wood. I found researching and preparing for the presentation helped me a lot more than just watching other peoples presentations.
