In my design innovation modules i took into account the heading on the Gcse/A-level templates when writing my design brief and specification which has not only made them more detailed but also made me think about all the areas but also highlighted how different they are from the art and design briefs i have done in the past.t.
What also helped to improve my work was better research early on in the project which allowed me to write much more accurately and gave me much better guidelines to translate over into my work. I did however have to go back to my brief and spec after I wrote it to make modifications as I had still made some mistakes with measurements which came up at a crit (i had written inches instead of mm) this highlighted that I need to proof read my work before committing to a final presentation.
As I spent a lot more time and now know that my brief and specification are accurate I have been referring back it to many times and quoting them in various places of my design work. Having a good design brief and specification has given me a good structure to work with and forced me to be much more creative in terms of how i work with the restriction I had set. This is significantly different to how I have been using design briefs in the past, in which i write them at the begging quickly, leaving them relatively loose and open to interpretation, not looking at it for weeks and then mentioning it at the end of my evaluation. Once i even wrote the brief and specification at the end of a product, which seems completely stupid now!
what I have learnt so far about Design brief and specs is they are a useful tool for design and should not be seen as a chore or something to be just rushed to get to the next stage.
